SHILLONG: Meghalaya is awaiting the test result of fish to see whether there is an element of formalin.
Meghalaya had sent the samples of fish for testing after the neighbouring states, Nagaland and Manipur banned the import of fish citing health hazards.
Though Meghalaya had not banned the import of fish, there is panic in the market over the move on the part of the state government to send the samples for testing. Earlier, Fisheries Minister Comingone Ymbon said that the state government will request the Centre to provide kits to test the fish.
He said the state government wants to ensure that the consumers are not affected by the contaminated fish. Fish is imported from Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Assam to tide over the shortage in the local market.
The state government wanted self sufficiency in fish production and hence promoted Aqua Culture Mission.
