Election of Deputy Chairman of KHADC on July 20

 SHILLONG: The election of the Deputy Chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will be held on July 20 at the Council Hall.

The Pro-tem chairman has fixed the date of July 20 at the Council Hall for the election.

 Chief Executive Member (CEM) of KHADC, H. S. Shylla said the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA) has proposed UDP MDC Equator Nongrang as the Deputy Chairman of KHADC.

He added that on the part of the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), PDF MDC Morning Mawsor also filed his nomination for the post of Deputy Chairman of the Council.

He stated that the Rule 33 (1) of the Assam and Meghalaya autonomous districts (constitution of district councils) rules, 1951 was used for the first time.

Rule 33 (1) states, “When either at the beginning of the new District Council or owing to the existence of any vacancy in the office of the Deputy Chairman at any time during the life of the District Council the election of the Deputy Chairman is necessary, the Chair shall fix a date for the holding of the election and the Secretary of the Council shall send to every member notice of the so fixed.”

Shylla said, “The strength of KHDA is 17 in number while PDA MDCs is 11 which may later be 12.”

As for the approval of the list of Executive Members (EMs) who will be part of the Executive Committee (EC) of the Council, he said that he would  meet the District Council Affairs (DCA) Minister, James Sangma in this regard.

He informed that Teilinia Thangkhiew will be the Deputy CEM while the other EM is Ricky Shullai.
