Behdeinkhlam festivities in Jaintia Hills conclude today
JOWAI: Hundreds of Niamtre followers of Sein Raij Tuber left their homes on Wednesday to fetch two sacred logs from Khliehriat and from Tuberkmai respectively for Thursday’s Behdeinkhlam ritual. The sacred logs known as ‘Bhang’ will be used in a ritual known as ‘Ka Iatan Bhang’ which is similar to a tug of war and is customarily performed at the sacred pool call ‘Ka Biar’ on the last day of the Behdeinkhlam festival. The Behdeinkhlam – a religious festival celebrated by Sein Raij Tuber annually – was the biggest among all Behdeinkhlam festivals celebrated in Jaintia Hills. On Thursday, hundreds of the Sein Raij Tuber members will carry the logs all the way from Khliehriat to Tuberkmai shnong. Health Minister AL Hek will also grace the celebrations with his presence.
Nongstoin school felicitates meritorious students
NONGSTOIN: The school managing committee of Assembly of God Secondary School, Mawthohthang Siejlieh on Wednesday felicitated nine students who had secured good grades in the 2018 SSLC examinations. The felicitation programme was attended by Nongstoin MLA Macmillan Byrsat who was present as the chief guest and the Sub Divisional of School Education Officer (SDSEO) of Nongstoin as the guest of honour in the presence of school headmaster MS Nongrem, school teachers, students and parents. Mementos and prizes were also awarded to the meritorious students. Malcolm Lyngkhoi secured the 1st Position with 68 percent.
Review meeting held in Nongpoh
NONGPOH: Sniawbhalang Dhar, Minister of C&RD attended a review meeting on flagship programmes at the DRDA hall in Nongpoh on Wednesday to observe the situation regarding the implementation of schemes and to ascertain the constrains faced by different departments. Dhar’s visit was part of an innovative government programme in which ministers are to visit each district once in every three months. The minister was accompanied by Umroi MLA GB Lyngdoh, Nongpoh MLA MB Syiem, Jirang MLA S Sohtun, and Umsning MLA JS Mawlong along with Ri Bhoi DC RM Kurbah, ADM & Project Director, DRDA DP Kharsati, department officials and representatives. Dhar also suggested that MLAs of the district should hold regular meetings with line Departments in order to implement schemes and projects properly and on time.
USTM observes U Tirot Sing day
SHILLONG: The University of Science and Technology celebrated the 183rd death anniversary of U Tirot Sing at the University campus on Tuesday. The programme began with floral tributes to U Tirot Sing by USTM vice chancellor PK Goswami and other dignitaries including faculty members and students. Delivering the introductory speech, Alaka Sarma, Pro Vice Chancellor of USTM said that Tirot Sing was a perceptive organiser and tactician and during his battles with the British, he organised the Khasi warriors. His ability to inspire the leaders and cadre came in for high praise, even from the enemy. Lakyntiewhun Lyngdoh, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, spoke about U Tirot Sing’s life and his freedom struggle. She said that Tirot Sing and his band of warriors conducted night raids on the British outposts and large units of British military contingents were ambushed and massacred.
Drug peddlers arrested in WJH
JOWAI: The West Jaintia hills Anti Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) lead by Deputy Superintendent of Police Neena Rabha and SI Arki Wahlang arrested two persons suspected of being drug peddlers. The arrested persons identified as Kynton Kynjing (26) and Rimi-oo Shadap (27) were arrested at Iawmusiang. The duo later lead police to the house of Phrangchwami Lakiang (24) in Dulong where 6.42 grams of contrabands, 1 syringe and 3 empty vials were recovered. Further, on being lead by Kynton Kynjing, the ANTF arrested Sh Chandiam Bthuh (27) of Sohrynkham, Lumlong. Police also recovered 2.73 grams of heroin, 6 syringes and 3 nitrozapam tablets.
Police recover fire arms
NONGSTOIN: After a tip off from reliable sources, Mairang Police lead by Sub Inspector LM Lyngdoh conducted a raid at Mawlyntriang village and recovered two homemade guns, two gun frames and one gun barrel including a kukri knife. The items were recovered from the house of Linter Ryntathiang (33) and Mastoring Ryntathiang (32), both of Mawlyntriang village. Both the accused persons have been arrested and a case has being registered against them.
Woman gives birth in ambulance
SHILLONG: 32-year-old Silda Matlang gave birth to a baby girl in a 108 ambulance bound for Shillong on Tuesday. Matlang was referred to a hospital in the city by Bhoirymbong CHC after being unable to deliver the baby. EMT Dolly Tohtih conducted a safe delivery in the ambulance and the baby was delivered at 8:30pm. Both the mother and baby were admitted admitted back at Bhoirymbong CHC.
Teachers’ body to meet in Asanang
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers’ Association (MUPSTA) has decided to hold the 25th state annual general conference at Asanang, near Tura on July 27. The decision was taken during the meeting of the central executive committee of MUPSTA on Monday.
