SHILLONG: Uranium mining will not start before obtaining statutory clearances from the state government and all authorities concerned as well as consent of people at the project site, a senior official of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) had said.
SB Bose, the deputy secretary of DAE, in his reply to a letter by HS Shylla, said UCIL was aware of the “sensitivity of the issue of uranium mining to the people of Meghalaya”.
“Over the years, several concerns were raised by various groups… and UCIL and DAE have addressed all these issues at different platforms to allay fears and doubts of people and prevent misinformation and myths,” Bose had said in his letter dated August 16, 2017.
Shylla said on Friday he had written to DoNER minister Jitendra Singh on the uranium mining project at Kylleng Pyndengsohiong Mawthabah on February 13, 2017, where he had requested the BJP leadership to cancel and revoke any decision related to the proposed uranium mining.
The letter was not made public earlier.
Summer session
The Summer Session of the KHADC will commence on July 25. As for the agenda, CEM Shylla said there is no such agenda but there is a resolution of KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum.
Congress role
With dramatic episodes unfolding in the KHADC, Shylla blamed the Congress behind the political drama in the KHADC.
Speaking to reporters, he said, “We thought it is the Congress who is supporting the PDF but it is the Congress that instigated the entire episode.”
He claimed that apparently a few of the MDCs might join the Congress.
Shylla went on to add, “Who knows PN Syiem might also contest from Congress?”
MUDA building bylaw
MUDA Building Bye-Laws of the District Council, 2015, was published in the gazette of Meghalaya but found it was an unauthorised publication.
“Now, on our part, we will recall the notification of the Building Bye-law to check if there is any rectification,” Shylla said.
