SHILLONG: PDF leader James Ban Basaiawmoit has expressed his surprise over discussions on uranium mining which resurfaced after Shylla became the CEM.
According to Basaiawmoit, the Council had already decided against uranium mining in relation to Wahkaji and Mawthabah areas when PN Syiem was still the KHADC CEM.
“PDF is anti-uranium group. It is surprising that the 3 rebel MDCs (Latiplang Kharkongor, James Sylliang and Blandingstar Warjri) are supporting the pro-uranium group. We have fielded Hadrian for the post of Chairman. We will see how many are from anti-uranium and pro-uranium groups,” he said.
However, KHADC CEM HS Shylla said that the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance( KHDA) opposes uranium mining.
“We have petitioned the authorities concerned in Delhi to cancel any move to mine uranium,” Shylla said.
Shylla also informed that the Executive Committee of the KHADC will visit Mawthabah to sensitise the people on the issue of uranium mining.
