SHILLONG: The number of taxpayers in Shillong circle has increased by 37 per cent, the highest in the country, in 2017-18 as compared to the previous years.
The tax collection in the circle in 2017-18 has been Rs 572 crore as 37,936 taxpayers have been added to the rolls, it was announced at a programme organised on the occasion of the 158th Income Tax Day at Aayakar Bhawan in the city on Tuesday.
RS Upadhyay, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Shillong, raised the official flag of the department with the commitment to continue the efforts towards increased mobilisation of revenue and provision of better taxpayer services.
The history of Income Tax in modern India dates back to the year 1860 when the first Income Tax Bill was introduced by James Wilson who became British India’s first finance member. This was approved by the governor general on July 24, 1860, when the Act came into force.
