SHILLONG: Pressure groups in the state welcomed the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (Second amendment) Bill, 2018.
Samuel Jyrwa told The Shillong Times that the bill is very important and essential for the protection of the identity of the microscopic of the Khasi community. “The Bill is long overdue. Even the ruling of the Supreme Court also talks about the same topic. We welcome the Bill and the Governor will give his assent to it,” he said.
KSU president, Lambok Marngar also welcomed the bill and said that any bill passed for the interests of the Khasi community is a welcoming move. “It is too early to speak in depth about the Bill but we welcome it. We understand the step designed by the KHADC for the survival of the identity because we have seen the non-Khasis have taken much advantage of the Khasis,” he said.
The bill was notified on Tuesday and passed on Wednesday where it will strip a Khasi woman of her ST status and all privileges if she marries a non-Khasi.
