MAWKYRWAT: The Ranikor circle of UDP on Friday welcomed the decision of the Election Commission to hold simultaneous by-polls and was confident that the party would defeat five-time MLA Martin M Danggo, who is contesting on NPP ticket.
“As a party we have prepared well and we are confident that we will win this election. The resignation of MM Danggo as MLA will be a blessing to the UDP and this by-election will be a ‘bye-bye election’ for him,” said Ranikor UDP president GG Bung Snaitang said.
UDP is one of the parties which had demanded that both South Tura and Ranikor should go to polls at the same time.
“We are very happy with the decision… We are ready for the election, the sooner the better,” Snaitang said, adding that had the by-elections were held separately, it would have gone in favour of NPP.
“Now the NPP in Ranikor will be in trouble because they have not visited villages to explain to people about the party and its symbol and also their leaders will have to focus more on South Tura to ensure that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma win the election,” Snaitang said.
He observed that with the model code of conduct in place, the government cannot promise anything that would favour the candidate of any party.
