TURA: Continuing its mission to beat plastic pollution and in an effort to keep the surroundings clean and green, the West Garo Hills District Administration in collaboration with school and college students, line departments, nokmas and the local people conducted simultaneous Cleaning Drive and Awareness Programmes at Chibragre, Ganol Apal and Mesak Dare near Tura on Saturday.

Braving harsh weather and sensing the importance of the noble initiative, people of these respective localities and others joined in the cleaning drive and took a decision to minimise and avoid littering in their surrounding areas.

The initiative also intends to recharge water sources and springs in and around the area and address the issue of water scarcity prevalent in almost all the villages in Garo Hills region, informed the Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh. Reminding the necessity of community participation in maintaining and looking after various picnic spots and other places frequented by people especially youngsters, he urged them to issue strict notice prohibiting littering of plastic and other waste in and around the area.

Based on the awareness and cleaning drives being held at regular intervals and as per the reports given by the local people of the respective areas, the places were seen much cleaner and even littering of waste has been reduced drastically.

The Deputy Commissioner also informed that all student participants will be given Certificates of Appreciation for their support in the mission.
