Criminal escapes from police custody

TURA: A criminal from neighbouring Assam who was arrested by Garo Hills police has escaped from police custody on Sunday afternoon in Ampati town of South West Garo Hills district.

The accused Dulu Sheik of Naribhita village (Kalapani) Mankachar was being shifted to the Under Trial Prisoner (UTP) van at Ampati police station by a police escort party when he broke free and escaped at around 2 O’clock in the afternoon. Despite a chase by the policemen they were unable to catch up with him.

The accused had been caught red-handed stealing a goat by the villagers of Sulguri. He was given a sound trashing resulting in his hospitalization. He was produced in court on Sunday which remanded him to judicial custody and was to be shifted to the district jail in Tura when he escaped.

A search has been launched to try and get him back in custody.
