Demand for enforcement of Marriage Registration Act in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: The convener of Maitshaphrang, Michael N. Syiem sent a reminder to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma with a request for immediate implementation of the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act 2012.

In a letter to the CM, he said the increasing number of single parents in the society abandoned by their husbands without giving any maintenance for the welfare and upkeep of their wife and children resulted in high school drop-out rates, juvenile crimes.

He urged the CM to ensure that the law is implemented in letter and spirit and that all departments must immediately make it mandatory that a marriage registration certificate is furnished for all official purposes.
