New Delhi: Minister for Information and Public Relations AL Hek on Tuesday met the Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and thanked her for opening Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) in North East including two in Meghalaya.
The Ministry of External Affairs and the Department of Posts (DOP) had notified that Tura and Baghmara will function as POPSK, following demand from the state. The government had notified several head post offices and post offices in the country as POPSK for delivery of passport related services to the citizens of the country with the objective to extend passport related services on a larger scale and to ensure wider area coverage. The present passport office at Shillong was opened by Swaraj earlier.
Hek also had a courtesy meeting with Minister of State for External Affairs Maj Gen (Retd) VK Singh to discuss the problems faced by the people of the state while applying for visas to various countries.
People from Meghalaya have to come all the way to Kolkata or New Delhi for applying visas. Since many countries have delegated the visa processing to agencies the same should be explored by the foreign missions, Hek suggested.
