State cops, KSU stopping Cachar people: Congress MP to Rajnath

SHILLONG: Meghalaya police along with the KSU are not allowing people from Cachar district in Assam to enter the state without citizenship papers, Congress MP from Silchar Sushmita Dev has said.
In a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday, Dev said the police in the Meghalaya have restricted “the movement of my constituents” following the release of the draft NRC list on Monday.
“As you are aware, the draft list has already created an environment of stress for the people. This has further exacerbated the problem at hand. Furthermore, the Meghalaya Police are also being supported by the Khasi Students’ Union at the border. These students are engaging in doing the policing themselves and are also beating the people up,” she wrote in the letter.
She termed this restriction as an infringement of freedom of movement of the people from Cachar. Stating that it is adding to the environment of fear and stress, Dev urged Singh to look into the matter and take steps at the earliest.
