NIT Meghalaya hardly gets sufficient students from Meghalaya

SHILLONG: The Director of National Institute of Technology, Meghalaya, Bibhuti Bhusan Biswal has lamented that the performance of students in schools and junior colleges in Meghalaya has not been very encouraging.

Speaking at the U Tirot Sing Best Students  Award organized by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad here in the city on Saturday, Bibhuti Bhusan Biswal  also stated that the 50  percent of the seats in NIT Meghalaya are reserved for the students of the state but the institute is not getting students from the state itself.

He said that the students have to have certain parameters like clearing Joint Entrance Examination – JEE Main and general students must secure 75  per cent in their qualifying exams whereas SC/ST students  should secure 65 percent

Stating that the institute has an intake capacity of   150  students out of which 75  students should be from Meghalaya, he however rued that he is not getting the required students from the state.

He also said that he would soon write to the Central Government to reduce the qualifying percentage for the students

He also said that they were planning to increase the intake capacity of NIT, Meghalaya from  150 to  600

Earlier, he said that the spirit of U Tirot sing was linked to the students who are also fighter in their own way even as he urged parents to encourage their children to study in an efficient way.
