Judicial panel concludes hearing into police firing

SHILLONG: Justice (retired) B D Agarwal judicial inquiry commission probing the Resubelpara firing incident has completed the inquiry.
An official dealing with the matter on Saturday said the hearing was concluded on July 28.
It was on March 7 night last year that the police had fired at three persons travelling in a pick-up van on the Resubelpara-Khaldang road in North Garo Hills suspecting them to be militants when they sped away through three different police check points despite being signalled to stop.
Police had admitted that the firing was due to mistaken identity.
After the villagers – Milseng Sangma, Tubal Sangma and Janrak Sangma – were injured in the incident and there was violence as the residents torched the Resubelpara police station and police barracks, besides seven police vehicles.
Though the commission was constituted last March 23, it could not carry on with the task immediately due to the delay in fixing the remuneration for the chairperson of the commission.
An official source said that the commission will compile the report at the earliest and submit it to the government.
