SHILLONG: The director of National Institute of Technology, Meghalaya, Bibhuti Bhusan Biswal has lamented that the performance of students in schools and junior colleges here “has not been very encouraging”.
Speaking at the U Tirot Sing Best Students Award organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the city on Saturday, Biswal said 50 percent of the seats at NIT Meghalaya are reserved for local students but the institute is not getting students.
He said the students have to have certain parameters like clearing JEE Main and general students must secure 75 percent in their qualifying exams whereas SC/ST students should secure 65 percent.
Stating that the institute has an intake capacity of 150 students out of which 75 should be from Meghalaya, he rued that he is not getting the required students from the state. He also said he would soon write to the Central Government to reduce the qualifying percentage.
He also said they are planning to increase the intake capacity of NIT, Meghalaya from 150 to 600
Earlier, he said the spirit of U Tirot sing is linked to the students who are also fighter in their own way even as he urged parents to encourage their children to study in an efficient way.
More than 80 students were given awards on the occasion. Henry Lamin, Pro Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Shillong Campus laid emphasis on skill education other than formal education. “Our education policy should produce skill educated youths rather than just educated youths,” he added.
