SHILLONG: Governor Ganga Prasad has approved the appointment of the chairman of Meghalaya Lokayukta.
Earlier on July 24, the selection committee under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had cleared the appointment of Pranoy Kumar Musahary, retired judge of the Gauhati High Court and chairperson of Meghalaya State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, as the chairman of Meghalaya Lokayukta.
An official source said on Tuesday that the governor approved the appointment a few days ago as mandated by the Lokayukta Act.
The last procedure left is the official ‘warrant of appointment’ that will be carried out after the by-polls to avoid any model code violation, the official added.
After the selection committee chose the chairman of Lokayukta, the matter was conveyed to the Supreme Court through an affidavit as part of the case pending in the court that wanted all the states to complete the process of the appointment at the earliest.
Once the official appointment is effected, Meghalaya Lokayukta will start functioning with the lone chairman as the Lokayukta in bigger states continues to function with only a chairperson.
The Lokayukta Act states that the anti-graft panel will have four members, besides the chairperson. The members of the Lokayukta will be appointed later.
