SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party, which is a major partner in the MDA government, wants Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to win the by-election in South Tura.
“We have made our commitment to support the chief minister for the South Tura by-polls. We are hopeful that he will win,” party general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said while talking to media persons after the special central executive committee meeting of UDP here on Tuesday.
UDP’s top functionaries, including president Donkupar Roy, have met the party’s leaders in Garo Hills to garner support for Sangma.
“They have agreed to abide by the decision of the high command,” Mawthoh said.
Former UDP leader Kris Kabul Sangma, who was against the party supporting the chief minister, resigned to contest as independent.
On Ranikor by-poll, Mawthoh said it “is extremely important for strengthening the party support base in Ranikor”.
“We would like to win Ranikor to increase the number of seats in the MDA government,” he added.
