SHILLONG: Annoyed by the poor customer service of the Central Bank of India, the public have demanded to shut down the bank branch situated in Bara Bazar in the city.
Refusal to accept counter cash deposits and a non-functional cash deposit machine attached to the main branch of the bank have angered its customers so much that they are questioning its existence now.
The bank has failed to show its credibility in the past as well.
According to complaints received from its customers, it has come to light that the single window operators (SWOs) at the bank’s Bara Bazar branch are refusing cash deposits while asking walk-in customers to utilise the cash deposit machine attached to the branch.
“The SWOs are doing intentionally despite knowing the wretched condition of the machine,” one of the angry customers said.
Customers are raising legitimate questions that it is the duty of the bankers to provide the requisite service when its machines aren’t operating in order. For the last many days, the cash deposit machine at the main branch is repeatedly sending an error message, “please try again”, whenever a customer punches it to for depositing cash.
The adjacent cash withdrawal ATM machine is also in a similar condition with the message displayed on the screen, “out of order”.
Furious customers said the bankers must know the fact that this branch is functioning for its customers and if they cannot give the desired service then this branch should be shut down like the one at Laban Last Stop and GS Road earlier this year. Many customers narrated what they have to go through in the main branch for want of customer services.
A bank official said the Laban Last Stop and GS Road branches were closed down since they existed within a radius of 3 km, which isn’t allowed under a rule. To a query, the banker replied that he is not in a position to actually say whether it was a blunder on the part of the bank to allow opening of the above two branches by flouting rules in place.
