SHILLONG: The Election Department is employing over 10 runners in Ranikor constituency to bridge the communication gap in non-motorable areas.
The runners will deliver important messages from connectivity deficit areas to the sector officer on the polling day.
Talking to media persons, Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor said over 25 sectors are non-motorable and had no proper mobile connectivity.
Informing that there are polling stations which can only be reached on foot, Kharkongor added that to fill in the technology gap and deficit, they have identified and employed 10-15 runners.
The runners have been chosen from among physically fit youths identified by the DEO (District Elcetion Officer), sector officers and BLOs (Booth Level Officers).
On security, Kharkongor informed that four companies of paramilitary forces for both South Tura and Ranikor have been deployed in addition to the existing police force.
He also expressed hope that the process would go without any hitch.
