Tikrikilla NGOs along with people take steps to combat influx

TURA: With an aim to monitor influx of outsiders into the region, several organisations from Tikrikilla along with Nokmas, Gaonburas and local leaders have come up with a number of resolutions.
The resolutions were taken up in a meeting organised by the Indigenous Forum for Peace Welfare and Empowerment (IFPWE), a body of combined traditional heads and the A’chik Youth Council. Several other organisations such as the AYWO, AIJIF, ASWA, GHSMC, FAF, AAYF, GSU Chibinang as well as representatives from different villages and officials of the police department attended the meeting.
During the meeting it was decided that Nokma and Gaonbura shall not provide any documents to any unknown person or issue any blank pads with seal and signatures to anyone.
Traditional heads of different villages have also been prohibited from endorsing any transfer, lease, mortgage of any kind of land to those who are not known in the village. Headmen as well as villagers have been prohibited from sheltering unknown persons in the village including traders or labourers without valid documents and identification. Owners of Areca nut and other plantations were directed to not allow any trader to make fake agreements or lease in exchange for motorcycles or house constructions.
All village headmen have been entrusted with the responsibility to report unknown persons to the concerned authorities without fail. It was also resolved to petition the DC, SDO, BDO, CDPO and other officers to cross check the credibility and authenticity of any supporting documents while issuing any EPIC cards, documents or certificates.  Awareness programmes in villages under the plain belt region on the fallout of the post NRC final publication in Assam is also being mooted.
As a step towards preventing crimes against women and children, relatives of victims have been directed not to compromise with the accused or his family members. Other NGO leaders like the Meghalaya Rabha Jatio Sewa Sangma (MRJSS), All Rabha Students Union of Meghalaya (ARSUM), senior citizens and Hajong Students Union of Tikrikilla also attended and shared their views during the meeting.
