TURA: Independent candidate for South Tura Constituency and former MLA, John Leslee K Sangma has alleged violation of the election Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by Chief Minister and NPP candidate, Conrad Sangma and Home Minister, James Sangma in the run up to South Tura Assembly by-election.

In his complaint to the Returning Officer for the constituency, Sangma alleged that both Conrad and James had violated the MCC during a meeting held at Balading locality of Tura on August 13. The former MLA quoting sources in the locality claimed that Conrad’s meeting was scheduled for 8:30 pm but he turned up for the meeting at 9:40 pm which continued until 11 pm thus, violating the permission given for his meeting. The former MLA also alleged that the party had used loudspeakers well into the night which violates the SC ruling that bars its use beyond 10 pm.

Leslee also alleged that James and Conrad had misused their position to influence people by visiting the site where funds were earlier sanctioned for construction of a road and inspecting it with assurance of more funds, when permission was given only for a meeting which violates the MCC.

Stating that the acts were a violation of the HC directive as well as a disrespect to election rules, Leslee sought action against them as per the rules laid down by the ECI.
