TURA: One of Garo Hills’ renowned singers of yesteryears whose melodious voice over the All India Radio held many an audience captive has passed away in Tura on Sunday.
Singer and songwriter Simpu G Momin passed away after a prolonged illness. She was 67.
She was one among the few well known Garo musical pop artists who stormed the musical scene in Garo Hills during the early 1980s and the 90s’ releasing one hit single after another.
Some of her hit singles were “Oh ang’ ka’sara na’a”, “Rebabone Sona”, “On’kubo Ka’sataikuna”, “Jarambong wal jatengao”, “Tangsekgipa samsi”, “Niksokja niwatna sagal gita,” and “Chanchijachim abachengo” among many more during her musical career spanning several years.
Born in a tiny village called Kujikura in the border region of Dalu, she completed her education in Tura and worked in the PWD and GHADC before joining the Tura Municipal Board from where she retired in 2015.
She shared space among the Garo musical greats of the 80s’ such as Raphael Marak, Dante Marak and Eras Marak. She began her musical career with the band ‘Holy Howlers’ at the beginning of the 1980s’ and went on to produce a number of solo hits.
Her musical talent spread far and wide and her songs were recorded in the All India Radio and broadcast from the Shillong and Tura stations almost every week. National channel Doordarshan went on to cast her in music videos for the north eastern region.
