SHILLONG: The city recently got its first skate park at Diengiong village near NEIGRIHMS.
The first ever North East Skate and BMX contest was organised on Day 1. More than 40 participants were there from Meghalaya, Assam and Mizoram.
Talking to media persons, organiser of the event J Majaw said, “I am also an avid skateboarder but due to lack of infrastructure, I ended up practising on the streets. That is when the idea of making the park hit me.”
He said his father helped him construct the park to promote the sports and give a platform to young skaters and BMX bike riders.
N Suting, a BMX rider, said he has been riding his bike for the past three years and is happy that a facility is now available in Shillong. “I will be happy to support any young enthusiast,” he said.
Another participant, LM Ralte from Mizoram, praised the skills of the locals and said he felt ‘honoured’ to participate at the event.
