Fish production training held
SHILLONG: A day-long training cum fish seed distribution programme with the theme “Enhancing fish production through distribution of quality fish Seeds to the fish farmers of Ri-Bhoi district was organised by Division of Fisheries, ICAR-RC for NEH Region, Umiam, on Thursday at Umniuh Khwan – a fishing village near Umiam under the TSP project in collaboration with Ri Bhoi fish farmer’s association. Deputy Director General for Fisheries and Animal Science, ICAR New Delhi, Dr. J K. Jena, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and distributed the quality fish seeds of indigenous cultivable fish species to a group of 75 progressive farmers and fishing community for fish farming and open ranching in Umiam Lake. He encouraged the farmers to produce fish seeds for enhancing fish production in the locality.While Director of ICAR Research complex for NEH Region, Umiam Dr N Prakash stressed on scientific fish farming to improve production.

11th convocation of MLCU
SHILLONG: Martin Luther Christian University on Friday celebrated the success of its 582 graduates in a grand event at their 11th Convocation, which was held at Windermere Resort, Umpling in the presence of the Visitor of the University, Governor Ganga Prasad.The graduates included one PhD, 284 Master’s degrees, 210 Bachelor degrees, 40 MPhil degrees and 47 Diplomas. The university also awarded an Honourary Doctorate to Meghalaya’s very own cave expert, Brian D Kharpran Daly and also awarded the university’s first outstanding Alumnus Award to Lian Khan Siam, a graduate from the Department of Management and Commerce Studies of batch 2015. Presiding over the ceremony as the Visitor of the university, Governor Ganga Prasad, reminded the graduates to be grateful and thankful to their parents and teachers who have helped them to get to where they are. He stressed on the fact that the graduates should utilise the skills instilled in them by the university to cope with the realities of life and to contribute not only to the upliftment of the state but also of the nation. The students of MLCU also performed a rendition of the song “Million Dreams” which resonated in the hearts of the graduating students. It culminated with the singing of the MLCU anthem followed by the National Anthem.

Army wives’ welfare association day celebrated
Shillong: The Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) Day was celebrated in HQ 101 Area in Shillong on August 23 with traditional élan and festivity. The celebrations was spread over a week which included various events for health care & personality development of Army wives. Lectures/ work shops were organised on “enabling the disabled” in which special emphasis was given to ensure overall development of specially abled children. Other lectures conducted during the week also focused on women empowerment and creating awareness about various schemes for women. A central welfare meet was also organised in Happy Valley on the same day and was chaired by Pia Ahuja, Zonal President AWWA, HQ 101 Area. During the meet Ahuja lauded the efforts of all members and emphasised on the ethos of sharing & caring. As part of women empowerment, a display on martial arts was also conducted by the trained ladies/ girls. A health camp for Veer Matas and Veer Naris was organised on Friday in Military hospital, Shillong.

Don Bosco past pupils to hold annual rally
SHILLONG: The 83rd annual rally of the Don Bosco Past Pupils’ Association is scheduled to be held on September 9 from 9 am at Don Bosco Technical School, Laitumkhrah, Shillong. It may be mentioned that for more than eight decades the rally has been held every year. The past pupils who attend the rally are also from other parts of the north eastern region. A programme has also been drawn up for a talk by an agricultural expert who is a past pupil. The topic will be pertained to agriculture for the common man particularly on kitchen gardening.

Measles-rubella vaccination campaign in full swing in SWGH
Ampati: As the district gears up for one of the biggest vaccination campaign in the country, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Task Force on Immunisation (DTFI), Ramkumar S convened a meeting on Friday with officials of Health, Education and ICDS departments, religious institutions and NGOs of the district to review the level of preparedness for Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign (MRVC) which will begin from September 24. WHO Consultant, Dr. Santosh Sahoo, who is monitoring the campaign in Garo Hills, also attended the meeting and stressed on good coordination between the departments concerned and all stakeholders for the success of the campaign. Chairing the meeting, the DC insisted on greater involvement of church leaders and religious institution and the NGOs in reaching out to the masses and sharing of knowledge about the campaign to dispel any apprehension in the minds of the people in view of this immunisation drive. He asked the heads of educational institutions to hold meeting with parents and explain to them about the importance of the campaign. Micro-level planning for the campaign and the need for extensive IEC activities were among other things discussed in the meeting.
