Tathagata Roy sworn in as the Governor of Meghalaya

SHILLONG: Former Governor of   Tripura, Tathagata Roy was sworn in as the Governor of Meghalaya at Raj Bhavan, Shillong by the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, Mohammad Yaqoob Mi, here on Saturday

Former Governor of Tripura, Roy was appointed as the Governor Meghalaya on August 21 by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind succeeding Ganga Prasad who has been transferred as the Governor of Sikkim.

Ganga Prasad was appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya on September 30, 2017.

Speaking to media persons after the swearing-in ceremony, the newly-appointed Governor Tathagata Roy stressed on imp0roving the State public transport system in order to solve the major problem of traffic jams in the city.

He said that Shillong with its topography cannot have wider roads and flyovers and hence emphasis should be laid on   public transport rather than private transport

“With public transport, road occupancy will be much less and private transport must be discouraged,” he said

Terming Shillong as his second home, Roy added that he had close attachment with Shillong as many of his relatives at one point of time lived here.

Earlier, Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma introduced his cabinet ministers to the newly-appointed Governor and during the introduction, Governor told the Chief Minister that AL Hek was his old friend.

Apart from Cabinet ministers, top officers of the armed forces, senior Government officials and many BJP leaders were also present on the occasion.
