SHILLONG: The office of the Hima Mylliem will organise the Dorbar Hima on September 7 after a gap of 18 years.
The Dorbar Hima, the “supreme power for the Khasis”, will be held at Fifth Ground (Dalang field) at Polo at 11am, announced the acting chief of Hima Mylliem, Pa’iem Ainam Manik Syiem, in the presence of his group of ministers, on Tuesday.
“We invite the elders and ministers of the Hima, traditional heads and residents falling under the jurisdiction of Hima Mylliem. The last Dorbar was held in the year 2000. Having worked together with the district council, we hope that the Dorbar Hima will be successful,” he told reporters.
According to him, the Dorbar Hima is indispensable for its administration forming a part of the customary practice of Hima Mylliem.
“The markets falling under the Hima Mylliem, especially Iewduh, will remain closed on the day of the Dorbar Hima and will re-open after the Dorbar Hima concludes,” Syiem said.
A minister of the Hima Mylliem, Myntri RF Kharbuki, said usually Dorbar Hima was held during times of emergency such as conflicts etc and the Dorbar Hima will strengthen the relation it shares with the people and the traditional heads.
“The Dorbar Hima seeks to strengthen the customs and practices of Hima Mylliem in its administration of the people. We often see that miscommunication crops up in the shnong and raid with the Hima Mylliem since no meeting is held,” he said.
“The Dorbar Hima will unite and bond the shnong and raid with the Hima. For the Khasis, a Dorbar Hima is the supreme power,” Kharbuki said.
Speaking of issues to be discussed at the Dorbar Hima, another minister, Myntri Midnight Kharbuli, said boundary dispute with Assam leads to harassment of the residents under Hima Mylliem, especially in Ri Bhoi district.
“We will write to the district council, (the) state government and even the central government to resolve the boundary dispute with Assam,” he said.
To a query, he said there are villages under the jurisdiction of Hima Mylliem though they don’t have a map.
