Seminar on Khasi language held
KHLIEHRIAT: A seminar on Khasi language was held in Jaintia Eastern College, Khliehriat on August 25 as part of the public campaign to mobilise support for the official recognition of Khasi language to the Eight Schedule to the Constitution of India. The seminar was graced by B Kharshandi, ADM, Violet Lyngdoh, MDC and a host of Khasi scholars including the President of Khasi Authors’ Society, Dr D.R.L Nonglait, college teachers and students. In his inaugural address, Kharchandi lamented on the actual situation in the State, where social affairs is being anglicise. He said ‘The Khasi people prefer to speak English all the time even among fellow Khasis, particularly in Shillong city. Khasi language is degenerated by Khasi themselves, and this must change and everybody should love and like to converse in their mother tongue with pride’. The Guest of Honour Violet Lyngdoh emphasised that mother tongue is essential in every aspect of social interaction. The sessions concluded with public interaction on various aspects of Khasi language in an effort to obtain recognition in the Eight Schedule to the Constitution of India.
Committee formed for measles & rubella vaccination campaign
SHILLONG: The Block Task Force Committee has been formed under Songsak C&RD Block for the upcoming measles & rubella vaccination campaign for children of 9 months to below 15 years. The Task Force Committee comprises of BDO of Songsak C &RD Block as the chairman and the Block Medical Officer as the member secretary. The members of the commitee are CDPO Songsak, BMC,Songsak, the medical officers from Ringrong PHC, Dobu PHC and Dagal PHC, BEE Songsak PHC, BPM,Songsak PHC, BDM, Songsak PHC, BAM, Songsak PHC, religious leaders from different denominations, Nokmas and Sordars from villages under Songsak Block and leaders from different NGOs etc. The main objective of forming the committee is to monitor the entire vaccination process the campaign and to tackle any barriers to achieve 100% vaccination to control the spread of measles & rubella.
United Nation’s orange day campaign observed
SHILLONG: The Auxilium Girls’ Higher Secondary School observed UN’s Orange Day Campaign under the banner of UNiTE every year, with this year being no exception. The purpose is to create awareness and end violence against women and children. To mark this day, the heritage club of the school organised a one-day seminar on Tuesday with the theme being “Protection of Oneself and Others from Sexual Abuse”. It was sponsored by Government of Meghalaya under the Voluntary Action Fund 2016 – 17 through the office of the DC, East Khasi Hills.
SPARK organises health programme
Shillong: Realising the need of ‘Health for All’, SPARK organised a sensitisation programme on ‘Health – Prevention and Promotion” at Mawlynrei village with an objective to improve the awareness level of the community people on health related issues thereby encouraging community participation to address the concerned heath matters. The programme focused towards addressing issues of personal health care, vaccination, hygiene and illness prevention besides special stress on family planning and teenage health issues. During the sensitisation programme, the resource persons imparted health education and sensitised the community on preventive and promotive health grounds as well as generated awareness, diagnosis and treatment of numerous health hazards. The resource persons for the programme were C Simto, Staff Nurse, Nazareth Hospital (CHD) and I. Khongwir, in-charge of Rynjah State Dispensary.
Three babies born inside ambulance
SHILLONG: On Wednesday, a doctor on duty from Nongstoin Civil Hospital, referred a pregnancy case to the higher center as the patient identified as Pynshailin Kharbani (23) was in prolonged labour but while reaching Mawsawa, the patient delivered a baby in the ambulance whereby the ambulance EMT Barisha Wahlang conducted the delivery. Both mother and child are doing well and were shifted to Mairang Civil Hospital by 108 Nongstoin based ambulance. In a similar incident on the same day, a staff nurse nurse on duty from Pynursla CHC, also referred a pregnancy case to higher center as they cannot conduct the delivery due to prolonged labour. The patient identified as Nedil Khongsdier (21) was shifted in the ambulance and after reaching Umtyngar she delivered a baby girl with the assistance of EMT Ambikar Khonglam . Both mother and child were shifted to Ganesh Das Hospital by 108 Pynursla based ambulance. In Tikrikilla, Balbila Sangma (25) delivered a baby boy inside the ambulance on reaching Poribari with the assistance of EMT Mobarak Hussain.Both the mother and child are doing well and were shifted to Tikrikilla PHC.
