Man assaulted in Mawlai for rape attempt

SHILLONG: A 40-year-old non-tribal man had to face mob fury at Mawlai Mawroh (Mawlyndop) after he allegedly attempted to rape a mentally challenged girl on Thursday afternoon.
The accused, identified as Uttam Biswa, worked as a carpenter in a house near that of the girl’s. He attempted rape when she was alone in the house.
Sources said Biswa’s attempt was thwarted when the girl’s uncle reached home.
When the news spread, an agitated crowd assaulted the person around 1pm.
East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said Mawlai police station received a complaint from the family of the girl.
Biswa was handed over to Mawlai police and taken to Civil Hospital for treatment.
