Cong to play constructive role, not to topple MPA

SHILLONG: With the NPP legislator from Phulbari, Esmatur Mominin, fearing toppling of the government by the Congress, Opposition Chief Whip and Congress MLA P T Sawkmie said on Sunday his party will play the role of a constructive opposition.
“We will play the role of a constructive opposition and we are not interested in any toppling game,” Sawkmie said on Sunday.
According to Sawkmie, since the people have given their mandate to NPP and the coalition MDA, they should rule the state.
“On our part, we will continue to raise important issues concerning the people of the state and we will be constructive,” Sawkmie said.
He said the current priority of the Congress is to prepare for the district council and Lok Sabha polls.
“We have candidates in all the constituencies for KHADC and JHADC,” he said.
The Congress leader said other political parties should not underestimate the party.
“We have 20 MLAs and we will work hard to ensure the victory of the Congress in the future elections,” he said.
Earlier, Congress spokesperson Zenith Sangma said the NPP is having insecurity since it is short of majority.
According to him, the coalition, supported by so many partners, is not a strong government.
Though the Congress and the NPP has 20 seats each, the deciding factor for any government formation is the UDP and its pre-poll partner HSPDP with a total of 10 legislators.
However, UDP chief Donkupar Roy has made it clear that the party will be with the NPP alliance and the government will complete the full term.
