SHILLONG: The temporary shutdown of the Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL) office here without any notice period has created difficulty for the contractual staff as they did not receive their August salary.
A source said no notice period was given to the staff, “which is illegal”.
The source also revealed that UCIL said the staff should allow the furniture to be moved to Jharkhand and the matter with the contractual staff will be resolved.
The UCIL office was closed from August 31. The corporation in its letter to the staff said it has not received mining lease and statutory permission from the state government. “On receipt of required permission which would enable UCIL to start its operation in Meghalaya project, your services may be availed,” DGM (I/P & IRs) SK Sharma said.
Sharma added that dues payable to the staff as per prevailing government rules will be paid by UCIL in due course.
UCIL has terminated the services of 10 staff — six in Shillong and four at Wahkaji — causing hardships to their families.
