TURA: With increasing number of students spending lavishly on gifts and cards for their teachers during celebration of ‘Teachers’ Day’ and in the process providing  gift and card shops the opportunity to witness their profit margins hit the rooftops, some schools have mooted a novel idea of encouraging their students to  end such a practice.

Students of the prestigious Sheerwood School in Tura have, this year, decided to make their own cards from chart papers and other items in honour of their teachers.

“Our teachers encouraged us to create our own cards rather than spending our parents hard earned money on readymade ones. We liked the idea and it felt really good to gift a card made with your own hands for our teacher,” a group of young Sherwoodians told this scribe on the eve of Teachers’ Day celebration.

The school, like many other institutions in the town, has long prohibited presenting individual gifts to teachers. Instead a collective fund generated for the purpose is utilised for gift items for the teachers.
