Youth killed in forces’ firing on stone-pelting protesters
Srinagar: A youth was killed and another injured after security forces allegedly fired on protesters during clashes in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Monday. The forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in over a dozen villages in Pulwama in the morning, following information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said. At the time of the operation, a group of youths started pelting stones at the forces in some places. Two persons were injured in firing by the forces during clashes in Gusoo village, the official said. The two were taken to a hospital, from where, one of them, Fayaz Ahmad Wani, was referred to the SMHS Hospital here. Wani was, however, declared dead at the hospital, he said. Clashes between the protesters and security forces were going on when last reports came in. The search operation is in progress, he added. (PTI)

Trolled Hanan injured in accident in Kerala
Kochi: Hanan, the 21-year old college student, who was trolled for selling fish to raise money for her studies, on Monday suffered injuries in an accident in Thrissur district, police said. The accident occurred when the car she was travelling in hit an electric pole in Kothaparambu near Kodungallur, police said adding she was returning after a stage show. She has been rushed to a private hospital here, sources said. A B.Sc student at a private college at Thodupuzha in Idukki district, Hanan’s story had gone viral after a Malayalam daily reported her struggles. However, a section of social media users expressed doubts about her struggles and claimed it was ‘fake.’ Hanan, a college student from Kochi, had contributed Rs 1.5 lakh towards the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. Man’s hand chopped off for enquiring about missing cow
Raisen: A 35-year-old man’s hand was allegedly chopped off by members of a family when he went to their residence to enquire about his missing cow here, police said Monday. The victim, Kallu Sahu, went Saturday evening to the home of Sattu Yadav in Pipalwali village, situated about 40 km from the district headquarters, in search of his missing cow, Sultanpur police station’s Assistant Sub-Inspector Malkhan Singh Meena said. However, a simple enquiry about the animal turned into a heated argument when Yadav did not give a satisfactory reply on the matter following which Sahu allegedly abused him, he said. The enraged family members of Yadav then caught Sahu and tied him to a tree. They allegedly thrashed Sahu mercilessly, attacked him with a sword and chopped off one of his hands and caused severe injuries to the other, Meena said. Sahu’s kin rushed to the spot and freed him from captivity, he said, adding that they later admitted him to the community health centre at Sultanganj from where he was referred to a hospital in Bhopal. Police registered a case in connection with the incident and arrested Yadav and his son on Sunday, Meena said. A search was on for three others – Yadav’s wife, his another son and a servant – who were also allegedly involved in the incident, he added. (PTI)

Self-styled godman held for molesting minor girl in Delhi
New Delhi: A self-styled godman allegedly molested a 15-year-old girl in a temple in south Delhi’s Fatehpur Beri, police said Monday. The incident took place on August 17 when the complainant along with her niece and son visited the temple. Since, the complainant’s son was ill, she took him to the self-styled godman, Nabbe Bhagat (42), to get his illness cured, a police officer said. The relative alleged that her niece was molested by the godman who also threatened to kill her, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Vijay Kumar said. Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s relative, a case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act on August 30, they said. Subsequently, Bhagat was arrested from his temple on Sunday, police said adding that further investigation is underway. (PTI)

Janmashtami celebrated with religious fervour in Delhi
New Delhi: Janmashtami, the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth, was observed on Monday with thousands of devotees thronging temples in the rain-lashed national capital and offering prayers on the occasion. The famous Krishna temples in Delhi – Laxmi Narayan Mandir, ISKCON temple, Amar Colony, Kirhsna Pranami Mandir, Hare Krishna Mandir among others, were specially decorated up for the festival. Despite rains, devotees thronged temples in the morning and participated in the special ceremony marking the birth of Lord Krishna in the night. Many also observed day-long fast on the occasion.
