SHILLONG: The Congress has taunted the NPP for taking help of allies, especially BJP, to form a government days after NPP state president WR Kharlukhi predicted the party’s doom.
Gaurav Gogoi, who arrived in the city on Tuesday, said NPP despite claiming itself to be a strong party has not been even able to form a Government on its own here.
“If NPP thinks they are so strong then why do they need allies and during elections they had claimed that they don’t need BJP support, so if they are so strong, they should reject the BJP support,” Gogoi replied when asked about Kharlukhi’s statement that “even Rahul Gandhi cannot revive Congress in Meghalaya”.
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Celestine Lyngdoh, who was present at the programme, said, “Nobody can claim that he is a prophet and the recent loss in by-election does not mean the end for Congress. We will work hard and we will come back in a big way.”
The senior state leader added that the party was not in a hurry to work with like-minded parties in Meghalaya.
Both the Congress and the NPP have 20 seats each in the Assembly.
Senior Congress leader and spokesperson Zenith Sangma said none of the political parties in the state has a clear majority. “The Congress has given a chance to the NPP to form government in Meghalaya and to fulfil the big promises which it made during the election and now people should see if the NPP can materialise those promises which were made in the elections,” he added.
