SHILLONG:  As petrol prices continue to burn the hole in one’s pocket, the State Government has hinted that there would be no reduction in the State VAT as far as petrol is concern.

Talking to media persons here on Wednesday, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma said that the  petrol prices is linked to market  and there was no direct subsidy from the Union Government

Asserting that the State VAT can be adjusted, he, however, said that the VAT rate  on petrol in Meghalaya  was  much lesser than that in  other neighbouring states

“State Government is under financial pressure and it may not be advisable to look into this aspect now,” he said while informing that he will convene a two-day meeting on Thursday and Friday with revenue generating departments like Forest, Excise, Taxation, Transport and Mining to discuss on how to increase the revenue.
