Search operation resumes on Brahmaputra to look for boat tragedy victims

GUWAHATI: Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) along with Army resumed rescue and search operation in Brahmaputra River on Thursday morning to look for rest of the passengers of the ill-fated motor-boar that capsized near North Guwahati on Wednesday afternoon.

The Army have pressed a helicopter in the search operation while drones have also been in used. Three persons including two girl students were killed while 19 others were rescued till the search operation was called off on Wednesday evening. The boat was carrying 42 passengers including college and school students, a district administration source said.

The wreckage of the boat was recovered at Srihati in Sualkuchi about 25 kilomerters down the stream from the site of accident.

Meanwhile, the administration has stopped motorboat services between Guwahati city and North Guwahati with immediate effect for indefinite period. A large number of Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses have been deployed to ferry passengers between North Guwahati and Guwahati city through Saraighat Bridge over Brahmaputra River.
