SHILLONG/TURA: The 57th Teachers’ Day was celebrated in the state.The AROH Foundation, a National NGO, organised various cultural and informative events at Lam-shaphrang Sengkynthei School of Block Laitkroh, East Khasi Hills.
To commemorate the day and show solidarity towards teachers, hundreds of students and parents from the village took part in cultural programme. Traditional Khasi shawls were gifted to the headmistress and teachers of the school.
AROH Foundation has been an active catalyst of holistic development towards 12 villages of Block Laitkroh in association with HDFC Bank.
Dr Neelam Gupta, president and CEO of AROH Foundation marked the ceremony saying “Education lays the foundation of our freedom, freedom to think, freedom to choose and freedom to turn thoughts into reality. It allows us to be vigilant, self-dependent and confident. It is high time that we come together against all evils of social prejudices to be part of Nav Bharat Nirman.”
In Tura, the function was attended by Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh as the chief guest in the presence of District School Education Officer, B. G Momin, Sub-Divisional School Education Officer, Tura G. D Sangma and Officials of Education department.
Speaking at the programme, the DC said that teaching is a noble profession which shapes the personality of the students and sets the future of the next generation.
Lauding the teachers for rendering their selfless service with dedication, he said “As part of the curriculum teachers should ensure and encourage the students to communicate in English during school hours.”
Considering the students coming from village background except Tura urban areas, he also said that most parents are illiterate and hence teachers have greater responsibility to teach and mould these students.
In Ampati of South West Garo Hills, the day was celebrated in a befitting manner in all the educational institutions across the district.
Deputy Commissioner Ramkumar S, who was the chief guest on the occasion, highlighted the role and values of teachers and the reasons that make Teachers’ Day so special from other occasions.
Stating that the role of the teachers is not only confined to schools, he said that teachers play a very crucial role in shaping the society.
Resubelpara in North Garo Hills district also celebrated the occasion.
Speaking as chief guest, Deputy Commissioner, S. C Sadhu, exhorted the teachers to keep a profile of every individual student so as to enable them to assess the strength and weakness of each student thereby channelising their efforts in shaping the lives of students towards a bright perspective.
In Baghmara of South Garo Hills the occasion was celebrated at the Don Bosco Secondary School of the town in which Deputy Commissioner, H. B Marak was the chief guest.
Marak said that the teaching profession was a very influential one which also builds character and urged one and all to respect those in the profession. He said that schools were temples of learning and must be treated as places of worship.
P A Sangma Chair Prof for Tribal Studies launched
Home Minister James Sangma on Wednesday launched P. A Sangma Chair Professor of Tribal Studies at the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM).
Launching the Chair, the home minister said, “I am thankful to Mahbubul Hoque for honouring my late father with recognition of a Chair in his name in the University on the topic of Tribal Studies which was very near to his heart. On behalf of my entire family, I thank USTM for this great honour.”
He greeted the teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day and wished the students a bright future as it was also the day of Freshers’ Social at the university. Sangma also handed over certificates and tabs to 16 students for their hundred per cent attendance in the last academic session.
”Growth of the country has to be based on intellectual ideas and knowledge economy. A competitive culture among the youths is necessary to move forward to excel in whatever they do and this is what I would urge to the youths from the north-eastern region to inculcate,” the home minister said.
