SHILLONG: Nongthymmai MDC Latiplang Kharkongor on Saturday rued the presence of drugs and sought the cooperation of the Dorbar Shnong and other stakeholders to check the menace.
Speaking during a felicitation programme held at Sunny Dale Secondary School to felicitate the youth of the locality who had achieved good results during the recent examinations, Kharkongor said KSU, women’s wing and youth groups should work together to eliminate the circulation of drugs among youths.
The programme was organised by the Dorbar Shnong Lumiawblot, Seng Samla Shnong (youth wing), Seng Longkmie (women’s wing) and the Pohktieh Unit of the Khasi Students’ Union.
Kharkongor attended the programme as the chief guest along with the Rangbah Shnong of Lumiawblot Pyllun Richard Dkhar as the guest of honour. Organising secretary, KSU Nongthymmai circle Richard Mawkhiew was also present.
Rangbah Shnong of Lumiawblot Richard Dkhar emphasized on the importance of education while Organising Secretary, KSU Nongthymmai Unit Richard Mawkhiew expressed his concern on the fact that very few Khasi youths are aiming for the civil services.
“Whenever we have to meet the heads of departments in the government they are all outsiders. There are too few Khasi IAS officers. If this is the trend then the entire administration will fall in the hands of outsiders,” Mawkhiew said.
Mawkhiew also urged parents to encourage their children to pursue their goals of becoming IAS officers. He said: “We need IAS officers who are locals, who understand the specific problems of the people here.”
Meanwhile, Eric Nongkynrih, General Secretary, KSU Nongthymmai Unit was felicitated for his sacrifices in the service of the people. Locality elders were also felicitated for their contributions. Also felicitated were the musical band, the Strait Brothers including well known musician UN Sun.
