SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has taken note of the plight of patients at Ganesh Das Hospital and NEIGRIHMS and sought corrective measures.
When a pending PIL on the deficiencies in the healthcare system in Meghalaya was taken up on Tuesday, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Judge SR Sen took a suo motu case particularly referring to the news reports published in The Shillong Times.
“We are disturbed to notice that despite various measures taken for implementing healthcare in the State of Meghalaya, a news item has appeared in The Shillong Times in its issue dated 03.09.2018 under the caption “Ganesh Das asks pregnant lady to sit on wheelchair during delivery, woman who lost baby narrates her ordeal,” the court said.
The report highlights the plight of the mother whose baby died due to the alleged carelessness of a nurse at the hospital after the pregnant woman was asked to sit on the wheelchair.
Senior government advocate K Khan will file a detailed report about the incident.
The court also referred to another news item that also appeared in this news daily on August 30 regarding the allegations of medical negligence by a NEIGRIHMS doctor and the matter came to light after the victim informed the Director about the incident.
The report is related to the alleged negligence by the doctor from the Gynaecology Department as per the letter written by the relatives of the patient to the Director of the institute.
Due to the apathy, the lady was rushed to Nazareth Hospital where she was operated upon on the same day.
The concerned counsel will have to report as to what action has been taken by the Director, NEIGRIHMS against the alleged erring doctor.
The court wanted to prepare a separate case based on the two news reports.
The matter will come up for hearing after two weeks.
