NIA court awards death for 2 ultras

GUWAHATI: A special court of National Investigation Agency (NIA) here on Saturday awarded death sentence to two and life imprisonment to two others after holding them guilty of involvement in mass killings that was triggered by terrorist outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in December, 2014.
A statement issued by the NIA said that while two accused, Vishnu Marzari alias N Berea and Ahoy Basumutary alias B Buhumbua, had been awarded death penalty, two others, Sanju Bordoloi alias Sibigiri and Nitul Daimary alias D Naihab, had been awarded life imprisonment.
Although the court had convicted the four in the case on August 29, the quantum of punishment was pronounced on Saturday.
On December 23, 2014, NDFB militants had indiscriminately fired upon villagers of Hatijuli Shantipur village in Sonitpur district of Assam killing six persons instantly and injuring two others.
The Assam government had handed over the case to the NIA which registered a case on December 30 the same year under various Sections of the Arms Act.
A chargesheet was filed against the accused on July 22, 2015.

Assam police team in UP to get details of Kamar-uz-Zaman

GUWAHATI: A team of Assam police has been sent to Uttar Pradesh to get details about Kamar-uz-Zaman, the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen ultra who was arrested by the Anti Terror Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday from Kanpur.
The Assam Police team led by a Deputy Superintendent of the Special Branch of Assam Police is likely to conduct search at the rented house of Kamar-uz-Zaman who hails from Jamunamukh in Nagaon district of Assam.
Assam Police on Friday arrested one Shah Nawaz Alam from Jamnamukh area in Nagaon district on Friday for his alleged link with banned Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. He was remanded to six days’ police custody on production in the local court. Alam is accused of being an accomplice of Kamar-uz-Zaman who was arrested by UP Police.
Meanwhile, a team of ATS of the UP police arrived in Assam on Saturday to carry out search at Jamunamukh residence of Kamar-uz-Zaman. The YP police team is likely to conduct search at the residence of Shah Nawaz Alam, the alleged aide of Kamar-uz.
