SHILLONG: There are more unpleasant surprises waiting for the state Congress, which is still smarting from the poll debacles and exodus of important leaders.
NPP leader and MLA from Phulbari, SG Esmatur Mominin said on Monday more Congress MLAs and former MLAs are expected to join the ruling party soon but refused to divulge further information.
However, he admitted that he is in touch with a Congress leader who wishes to join the NPP.
The Congress has suffered blows in the state when its senior leader MM Danggo left the party to join NPP. Another major jolt was the resignation of veteran leader DD Lapang.
When asked if NPP would welcome Lapang, Mominin said, “He (DD Lapang) is a mentor and he is a great leader and we will be very happy if he comes and joins our party. The NPP will be stronger if it gets leaders like Lapang.”
Terming the resignation of Lapang as a big loss to the Congress, Mominin said his resignation would “affect it and its position will only deteriorate in future”.
A senior Congress member in Ri Bhoi has also hinted that several Congress leaders from the district might follow in Lapang’s footsteps.
