Meghalaya students’ cultural, freshers meet held in Pune
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Youth Association Oune (MYAP) held the 3rd ‘Cultural cum Freshers meet’ at Vishwavabhan Auditorium, Symbiosis College in Pune on Sunday. The objective of the event is to create a comfortable atmosphere and a sense of security for students from Meghalaya who are pursuing their studies outside of the state as well as for working individuals. During program students performed the Wangala Dance and Khasi dance besides as well as musical items. A total of 67 freshers attended the event along with more than 300 students and working professionals. The MYAP was established back in 2012. The association caters to the needs of the people and problems faced by Meghalayans in Pune.
Assam Rifles DG attends border conference in Delhi
SHILLONG: The 3rd edition of the ‘Smart Border Management’ programme was organized jointly by ‘India Foundation’ and ‘FICCI’ in New Delhi on Monday. Lt Gen Sukhdeep Sangwan, DGAR attended the conference as an eminent panelist. Discussions and debates were held on the theme ‘New Age Solutions for Contemporary Challenges’. The panelists also discussed on issues such as big data and predictive analytics for smart border security along with applications of ‘unmanned systems’ capabilities to enhance border security. The conference was also attended by stakeholders from the government such as the Indian Defence Forces, Border Guarding Forces, state police, industry, think tanks as well as border communities.
Art festival, photography workshop, exhibition underway
TURA: The Meghalaya Art Festival centering on the theme ‘Observation and Realism’ was inaugurated at the District Museum in Dakopgre, Tura on Monday. West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh graced the occasion as the chief guest. The Five Day Art Festival cum Photography Workshop and Exhibition will be held at the District Museum in Dakopgre and District Auditorium in Tura respectively from September 17 to 21. The first of its kind art workshop includes textile design (tie & die and batik), mount board cut (multi colour relief prints) and screen printing while photography workshop includes basics, fashion, travel and culture and introduction to dslr video. The photography workshop which has been conducted from 2014 has proved to be a turning point by taking photography to a next level wherein the participants were able to acquire skills and technical knowledge. Various works of Art were also exhibited at the venue, which are available for purchase.
Baghmara Govt HS School without key lecturers
SHILLONG: The science stream at Baghmara Government Higher Secondary School has been without a physics Lecturer since December 2017 after Rakkam A Sangma resigned to contest the Assembly polls. Rakkam, who won the election from Rongara-Siju, said in a statement that since 2014 the college has not hired a mathematics teacher after Gamseng K. Marak became the District Statistical Officer at Baghmara. “I took up the matter since April 2018 but I am disappointed with the slow movement of files from the tables of bureaucrats. I was informed by the Director DSEL that the files relating to the appointment of assistant lecturers for different Higher Secondary Schools are pending with Principal Secretary, Education for many months”, he said. According to the legislator, the delay will result in spoiling the career of hundreds of students. “The HSSLC selection test is imminent whereas even a single class of physics and mathematics is yet to start, forget about completion of course,” Rakkam said. The legislator expressed his disappointment over the working style of the officers and even wrote to the Principal Secretary of Education to address the issue.
Hindi Week observed in PAG office
SHILLONG: The office of the Principal Accountant General (Audit), Meghalaya, and Regional Training Institute, Meghalaya jointly observed Hindi Week which concluded on September 14. Noted historian Helen Giri Syiem was present as the chief guest during the closing ceremony. Two annual Hindi magazines – Purvasha and Navin Purvanchal Sandesh of the Office of the PAG (Audit) and Office of the PAG (A&E) were also released by the chief guest. The best three contributors of the Purvasha magazine were given cash awards of Rs 1,500, Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,000 while the contributors of Navin Purvanchal Sandesh were given Rs 1,000, Rs 700 and Rs 500 respectively. Various competitions like Hindi essay writing, translation, Hindi calligraphy and Antakshree were conducted and the winners were also given cash awards along with certificates.
Woman gives birth in ambulance
SHILLONG: Tragulis Sangma (25) delivered a healthy baby girl inside an Ampati-based 108 ambulance on reaching Garobadha. EMT Arifiuz Zaman, conducted the delivery. Both the mother and child have been admitted at Garobadha PHC.
