Permanent EFLU director
Shillong: FKJGP Mawlai Circle under the leadership of its president, Marbud Dkhar along with its members on Wednesday met the Acting Director A K Mishra of English and Foreign Language University (EFLU) after it received complaints against the institution. The union demanded that there should be proper advertisements for admissions, criteria for entrance exam,posts for faculty etc. FKJGP further asked for the percentage of students, both from the North East and outside the region and whether EFLU has reservation policy. The union is also shocked to see that the university does not have a permanent Director till now. It urged the government to look into it.
HYC meets Prestone
SHILLONG: The HYC Riwar Mihngi circle on Thursday met Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong urging him to develop necessary infrastructure in Pynursla which was upgraded into a Civil Sub Division recently.The NGO said that the civil sub division office building should be developed and that there are only few staff. The number of staff should be increased, the NGO added. Tynsong said the HYC, Pynursla was also against the inclusion of certain areas in the proposed Sohra district. “The HYC said the people of Pynursla prefer to come to Shillong rather than going to Sohra due to its geographical distance”, Tynsong said.
RKM inter-school seminar
SHILLONG: As part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda’s historic participation in World parliament of Religions in Chicago, an inter school seminar on Swami Vivekananda’s historic paper on Hinduism was held on Wednesday. The first prize was won by Shivam Yadav of St Edmund’s HS School. The second and third prizes in English were won by Megha N Daloi of JNV Mawphlang and Baiasuklang Majaw of RKM HS School, Sohra, respectively. While in Khasi category, Laitbha Mawthoh, RKM School Laitdiengsai, won first prize, Anniefica Thabah of RKM HS School, Sohra, and Balarihun Kharlukhi of RKM School Mylliem were the first and the second runners-up, respectively.
Central employees observe protest
SHILLONG: Following the agitation called by the National Joint Council of Action (NJCA) (united platform of Central Government Employees), the Central Government of Meghalaya has observed ‘All India Protest’ in front of GPO in the city at 1.30 pm on Wednesday. The objective of the protest was to settle the 10 points charter of demands which include enhancement of minimum pay, scrapping of new pension scheme, immediate implementation of assurance given by a group of Central Minister in 2016 to NJCA leaders on various demands relating to 7th Central Pay Commision etc.
B’deshi man held at border
SHILLONG: The BSF troop deployed at BOP Chinchingpara in West Garo Hills has apprehended one of the three suspected Bangladeshis who were trying to infiltrate on the zero line. The 30-year-old man, identified as Umas Ali, was arrested and two others escaped. Ali has been handed over to police. On Wednesday, the border sentinels at Tuka in East Khasi Hills recovered 25 cattle worth Rs 5.35 lakh. However, the smugglers escaped. On the same day, the BSF at Nayabazar in the same district and Kuliang in East Jaintia Hills seized 29 cattle worth more than Rs 4.35 lakh. In the last seven days, BSF seized 187 cattle and contraband items worth more than Rs 45.5 lakh from different border areas.
Drugs seized
SHILLONG: Police on Monday seized 178.18 grams of suspected heroin and arrested two persons including a woman from the city. The accused was identified as Joseph Hmar (24) from Madanrting and on his leading, police also arrested a woman , Lhingnoilam Haokip (28) from Madanrting, Block-D. From her possession one soap case containing suspected heroin of 178.18 gms was recovered and cash of Rs 1,15,500.
