Imphal: Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla onThursday hailed approval of ordinance on instant triple talaq as a “historic moment” as the practise was “anti-Islamic.”
Triple talaq is “derogatory and violates the rights of the muslim women”, Heptulla told PTI commenting of clearance of an ordinance by the Union cabinet on Wednesday to make instant triple talaq a penal offence.
She thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his initiatives on the betterment of the muslim women.
“It is a historic moment … the practice (of triple talaq) is anti-Islamic…it will provide relief for muslim woman,” she said. She added that most of the muslim nations across the world have also banned it and the country should follow it.
On those who have been objections on clearance of law related to instant triple talaq, Heptulla said that “it should not be opposed as it concerns the welfare of muslim women and those who objects are doing it for political reasons.” (PTI)
