Tendulkar refuses to receive D.Lit from Jadavpur University
Kolkata: Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar has refused to accept an honorary Doctorate of Literature that was to be conferred on him by Jadavpur University (JU). However, five time world champion pugilist Mary Kom will be conferred with an honorary Doctorate at the 63rd Annual Convocation to be held on December 24. JU’s pro-vice chancellor Pradip Kumar Ghosh told reporters that the former batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar informed them that he doesn’t accept an honour of this stature from any university and had earlier turned down Oxford University as well. Director of Tata Medical Centre and Haematologist Mammen Chandy, Eminent Economist Kaushik Basu, Banker Chandrasekhar Ghosh will also receive the D.Lit. (UNI)
Aguero inks contract renewal with Man City until 2021
London: Manchester City’s Argentina striker Sergio Aguero has extended his contract by a year until 2021, the English football club announced on Friday. The 30-year-old joined Man City in 2011 from Atletico Madrid, and became the Citizens’ all-time top goalscorer with 204 goals in 299 appearances, reports Efe. “I am happy for this additional year. My idea was being here for 10 years. I’ve been here for seven years, it’s going to be 10 when the contract expires,” Aguero told Man City TV. “Hopefully, that’s going to happen. This was the main reason I signed,” he added. The club’s director Txiki Begiristain praised the Argentina international saying: “We are fortunate to have had one of the best strikers in the world at our club for so many years and I’m sure our supporters will be thrilled with this news.” The Sky Blues are scheduled for a clash with Cardiff City on Saturday at the Cardiff City Stadium in Wales. India to host World Women’s Boxing Championships
New Delhi: The World Women’s Boxing Championships, to be hosted by India after more than a decade, will be held from November 15 in the national capital, a top official of the international body said on Friday. The teams will have to be in Delhi by November 13, with the competition starting a couple of days later. The marquee tournament was last held in India in 2006 and remains the best for the country in terms of performance. India had topped the medal tally with four gold, three silver and one bronze medal. The celebrated M C Mary Kom, who has been nicknamed ‘Magnificent Mary’ by the AIBA, will be gunning for a sixth world title at the event which would conclude with the finals on November 24. The first women’s world championship was held in the Unites States in Scranton in 2001. (PTI)
Rain washes out 2nd T20 between Indian eves and Lanka ladies
Colombo: The second T20 International between India women and Sri Lanka women was washed out on Friday due to heavy showers. Electing to bowl after the start of the match was delayed by half an hour due to rain, India made vital blows before the heavens opened up again, forcing the teams off the field and eventually leading to the wash out. India reduced Sri Lanka to 49 for three in the 7.5 overs of play that was possible. India had won the first T20 by 13 runs on Wednesday. The third T20 of the five-match series will be played on Saturday. (PTI)
Osaka eases into Tokyo semis
TOKYO: U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka continued to flourish in front of her home crowd at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, as she comfortably dispatched Barbora Strycova 6-3 6-4 on Friday to reach the semi-finals. The 20-year-old is competing at her first event since winning her debut Grand Slam earlier this month and looks to have brought her New York form home with her as she has yet to drop a set so far in Tokyo. Osaka will face Italian Camila Giorgi in the semis on Saturday after Victoria Azarenka was forced to retire injured in their quarter-final contest with Giorgi leading 5-3 in the first set. (Reuters)
