GUWAHATI: Assam has registered a steep rise in incidence of rape cases during the last couple of years. Rape cases have been in the rise in the state with the district of Barpeta recording the highest number of such cases during the period, according to information provided by Assam government in the State Assembly on Monday.
While 1552 cases of rape were registered in the state in 2016-17, the number went up to 1868 in 2017-18, Parliamentary Affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary informed in the state legislative assembly.
He was replying to question raised by AIUDF legislator Md Hafiz Basir Ahmed. The highest number of rape cases in both the years was registered in Barpeta district, which was 148 in 2016-17 and 216 in 2017-18.
Dhubri district recorded 102 and 122 rape cases in 2016-17 and 2017-18, respectively while Nagaon district registered 97 and 98 respectively in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
During the same period, 1130 murder cases were registered across the state in 2016-17 and 1868 in 2017-18. The district of Kamrup (Metro) registered the highest number of murder cases of 82 and 93 for the respective years.
