SHILLONG: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Celestine Lyngdoh has criticised the BJP for taking credit for schemes and programmes which were initiated by the Congress-led UPA government.
The MPCC chief on Tuesday alleged that the saffron party was playing “a political game” with its eyes set on the Lok Sabha election in 2019.
“For four and a half years, the BJP did not do anything. They are playing political games and taking credit,” said Lyngdoh.
He also said Meghalaya had implemented the Mega Health Insurance Scheme in three phases before the Prime Minister inaugurated the Ayushman Health Insurance Scheme. “How much will they cover with the Ayushman scheme is yet to be seen as there are around five states which have refused to take that scheme,” he added.
On Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s statement about developing connectivity in the North East, Lyngdoh reminded that the four-laning of the highway from Jorabat to Umiam was done under the Congress government.
He also pointed out that the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road was completed by the Congress and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Referring to the BJP’s much ambitious proposal to rejuvenate waterways, the MPCC chief said former chief minister Mukul Sangma had “widely spoken about connecting waterways, especially in the border areas be it with Bangladesh or Assam, so that people can transport goods at a cheaper rate”.
