SHILLONG: Chief Secretary Y Tsering will meet Union Public Service Commission in Delhi on October 1 to hold discussion on the appointment of a new DGP.
An official source said the UPSC’s move comes after the state government had sent relevant papers related to the senior police officials who are eligible for the top post.
Earlier, the senior most police official, R Awasthi, DG, Civil Defence and Home Guards, was appointed temporarily on August 1 to look after the office of the Director General of Police in addition to his own current duties.
Awasthi will be retiring on September 30.
The Supreme Court had made it mandatory to effect the appointment of new DGP through UPSC to prevent favouritism
Earlier, the State Security Commission had the power to recommend names for the appointment of new DGP and the state government finally decided on the matter.
The Apex Court had also banned the appointment of acting DGPs.
