SHILLONG: Electronic wastes are considered as deadly and harmful. It is a welcome relief for Shillong in the form of E Waste management that is trying to purge the city of its E- wastes and thereby reduce the health threats posed by these.
E-waste is described as discarded electrical or electronic devices. Used electronics which are destined for reuse, resale, salvage, recycling, or disposal are also considered e-waste.
The step of would greatly help Shillong as it is reeling s under the problem of waste management especially in Shillong city with overflowing dumping grounds
Worn out computers, lap tops, mobile phones lay stacked at the temporary shed of the Green Skill Development Programme under Environmental Information System sponsored by Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change at the State Central Library as few government departments and individuals alike dumped their E- wastes there.
The collected wastes will be either recycled or discarded in a safe manner without causing harm to the environment or the health of an individual.
Talking to news person, ENVIS coordinator and Asst professor of NEHU, Dinesh Bhati said the life of any electronic device is 10 to 15 years and it is the responsibility of the producer to pick it up after it has lived its life span as if it is mixed with other wastes it is hazardous.
“It was going to wrong places and causing dangers to people working with waste management and we are sensitizing the public that whatever material they have that they are not using , can be discarded to our partners here and whichever can be recycled would be recycled,” he added.
Informing that in the last drive that they conducted, electronic waste of 2000 KGs from Shillong were recovered , Bhati said that they were spreading the news among the communities and the response was good.
