SHILLONG: The State Planning Board has advocated the idea to develop the PWD office in Barik Point into a multi-level parking lot to ease perennial traffic congestion on city roads.

Talking to media persons after a marathon meeting with the line departments over the traffic congestion in the city, Planning Board Chairman, Lambor Malngiang said that they would conduct an inspection of the state on October 3.

He said that the mutli-level parking lot would be of great help since many schools like All Saints, Pine Mount, Step by Step were located nearby and all the parents who could come to drop and  pick up their wards, would not be allowed to park their vehicles anywhere but the proposed parking lot.

During the meeting, the Board was also informed that the as many as 80 private vehicles were registered in Shillong every day. The Planning Board has also directed the Education Department to write to the Schools to use School buses which would greatly reduce the traffic.

He also said that the government was keen to provide unutilised SPTS buses which are scattered all over the city right now to the schools so that they can be optimally utilized. ‘

During the meeting, discussions were also held on identifying link roads within the city.

Malngiangh added that they have identified a proposed link road from Laitumkhrah to Malki, Motingar to Lumparing   and Barapani to Mawlai

The meeting was attended by all the line departments of the State Government including police
